Anonymous Ruins California Cop’s Life Over Single Dumb Tweet

It doesn't take much to set off the fury of the hacktivist collective Anonymous. Last night a California cop made a tweet suggesting he'd shoot hackers. Now he's been run off Twitter and is under an official investigation.
Richmond Police Department Sgt. Mike Rood became a target after he offered his support on Twitter to UFC President Dana White, who has been engaged in an entertaining feud with Anonymous over his vocal anti-piracy stance.
Last Thursday, Rood tweeted this:
Some Anonymous sympathizers caught wind of this last night, and his tweet was picked up by the popular Twitter account YourAnonnews. Anonymous overwhelmed the Richmond Police Department page with news that one of their cops was talking about shooting people on Twitter, and posted pictures of what appears to be Rood's badge and his truck (Rood used his Twitter handle for his vanity license plate, which is always a bad idea if you think you may become the target of a digital mob in the near future.)
The Richmond Police Department was flooded with complaints and now they're opening an investigation, according to The Mercury News. Think before you tweet: Could this summon thousands of angry nerds to destroy my life?

Eat at McDonalds for FREE! (limited time only) – Facebook Scam

Scam Signature Message:
Eat at McDonalds for FREE! (limited time only)
McDonald’s is currently giving away free meal vouchers to all Facebook users!!
Scam Type: Survey Scam
Trending: January 2012
Why it’s a Scam:
Clicking the wall post link takes you to the following page:
As usual, here you are asked to Post the scam message to your profile.  After leaving a comment, the following survey scam loads:

**Note – Scams like this often use multiple domains, so you may see a variation in the landing pages and scam messages.
How to Deal with the Scam:
If you did make the mistake of sharing the scam link, then you are now spamming your friends with the very same message. Clean-up your newsfeed and profile to remove references to the scam. (click the “x” in the top right hand corner of the post).
Never complete surveys to unlock videos or other content on Facebook. Scammers use these tricks to either spread malware, obtain personal identification or earn commissions from marketing companies. Don’t pad their pocket and possibly open yourself up to harm!
Some of the surveys require you to download files to your computer. Never do this! If you did so in error, then run a complete system scan with a good anti-virus software program. The I.Q. Quiz scam has been around for a while, and it typically requires you to enter your cell phone number to receive the results. The scammers then bill you for premium services. Keep an eye on your phone bill for bogus charges.

Anonymous swoop on Mexico govt. sites in copyright law protest

Online hacktivist group Anonymous has blocked access to Mexican Senate and Interior Ministry websites. The attack is a protest against a proposed law that will see those who violate copyright online fined one million pesos (over $100,000).
The proposal, from conservative senator Federico Doring, is widely seen as the Mexican version of the SOPA/ PIPA bills, denounced by Wikipedia and other web giants, as well as by the internet community at large, as a threat to internet freedom.
Google, YouTube, Yahoo, AOL and many others have likened the bills to China-style censorship. The deals were supposedly created to protect copyrighted material, but most believe they would cripple the internet, effectively killing all websites allowing user-uploaded content, endangering potential whistleblowers and severely damaging online freedom of speech.
The controversial bills have been shelved indefinitely by the US Congress after the wave of protests and blacking out of popular websites such as Wikipedia, to get the point across.
Despite the victory of internet users in the SOPA/PIPA case, however, other battles rage on. Another controversial treaty – ACTA, an international agreement aimed at protecting intellectual property – sparked mass protests in Poland after its signing by the country.
Anonymous has already targeted official websites in the countries that have signed ACTA. They struck the Polish, French and Czech government websites, as well as the sites of the Irish ministries of justice and finance, the European Parliament, Ireland’s Innovation Minister Sean Sherlock and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The proposed Mexican law is the new target for Anonymous, who seem ready to tackle any organization or government on the planet that threatens internet freedom and free speech. Anonymous claimed responsibility for the attacks on Mexican websites on their Spanish Twitter account Friday.
Interior Secretary Alejandro Poire told a news conference that the ministry's site had been blocked late morning. It lasted for a little less than five minutes, the site was not compromised and officials were investigating, Poire said.
Doring said in his Twitter feed that Anonymous have the right to show they are against his proposal, but do not have the right to attack websites. He also insisted that the proposal "does not contemplate any criminal punishment" and would not sanction users of social networks because they do not make a profit.
This is not the first time the elusive internet collective is operating on Mexican online turf. Last October, Anonymous threatened to publish information on drug cartels in the country, with the main focus on Los Zetas (one of the most powerful and violent drug cartels) and those, who have been collaborating with the cartels, such as police officers and taxi drivers.
Anonymous posted an online message to Los Zetas drug lord Heriberto Lazcano, reminding him of the futility of trying to fight them, as the "global spirit of this struggle cannot be shot at, or burned with acid."
Over 47,000 people have been killed in Mexico since 2006 at the hands of the cartels.

85 million people use Apple’s iCloud

In a little over 3 months, more than one person in a hundred now uses Apple’s cloud-sync service.
That’s more people on iCloud than the total sales of iPhones, iPads, iPods or iMacs combined, during that same period. This would be impressive in itself, save for the fact that iCloud is free of charge.
The service, released by apple last October by Apple to replace its MobileMe platform, allows users to sync their email, contacts, and bookmarks, among other things, between any iOS device they own. It also syncs to personal computers running Mac OS X, as well as Windows.
iCloud can be found here.

Angry Birds hitting Facebook on February 14

This Valentine’s day may be quite lonely for a lot of people, whose significant others are into Angry Birds. Rovio just confirmed that their immensely popular title is hitting the world’s largest social network on February 14.
Rovio plans to hold a huge launch event in Jakarta, which according to the company is the “global capital of Facebook”. The Facebook version will brings some nice new twists to the gameplay, so it’s definitely one worth checking out.
The Facebook Angry Birds will have higher quality animations than their mobile counterparts and will introduce new power-ups. According Penn Olson those special power ups will either be an earthquake or new, more powerful birds.
Naturally, there will also be some new features that make the Facebook Angry Birds more social. Leaderboards will allow you to measure your skills against those of your friends and the players around the world.
So how about cancelling the reservation at that fancy restaurant and dedicating Valentine’s day to some proper pig slashing?
P.S. Of course, if you are not into Facebook, you can always play the online version within the Chrome web browser or you can download their PC application, but that one doesn’t come free.

Yes, Apple’s iMessage is killing the text message, and I love it

When Apple announced that iOS 5 would launch with support for its own communication service iMessage, it seemed to be a clear cut stab at the heart of one of the carrier’s biggest money makers, text messaging. It was immediately obvious that this should have a huge impact on how carriers of the iPhone would be charging for these services in the future.
Now it’s three months after the launch of iOS 5 and the new iPhone 4S, both of which have had time to make an impact on the volume of messages being charged for by the carriers and those being sent for ‘free’ using iMessage. But has it?
According to a great piece by Jenna Wortham at The New York Times today, it has. She shares some of her usage numbers and concludes that there has indeed been a dip in the amount of text messages that are being sent through the carrier’s system, at least in her case.
I’ve long been fascinated by the impact this would have on the carrier ecosystem and have written about the way that it could change the way that the carriers charge for services in a big way.
So I decided to do a bit of a roundup of my usage along with my coworkers Drew Olanoff and Brad McCarty. I also grabbed some numbers shared on Twitter by World of Apple’s Alex Brooks.

This first chart is mine. You’ll notice that there was a drop when iOS 5 was released in October, but the biggest fall didn’t happen until my friends had a chance to buy an iPhone 4S or perform an upgrade, something ‘normal’ users are typically slower to do.
The change since then has been striking though, and the chart as of the same period in 2010 reflects the same numbers you see here in August and September. It seems evident that the people that I communicate with are also iPhone users and upgraded fairly quickly.
This next chart is Drew’s and shows the same downward trend, although it slopes more gradually. It’s likely that the people he communicates with have more diverse phone tastes and have not adopted it as fast, although they definitely have. The arrow for Christmas rush indicates when people went on a buying spree for the new iPhone, with the results showing up in January.
Alex’s graph shows a similar trend with a large drop into November, also indicating a high adoption rate among the people he messages the most. Note that Alex adopted the beta in July but saw no real effects of it as there wasn’t anyone else in his circle running iOS 5 at the time.

At this point it’s clear that the graphs of text message usage on traditional carriers are going to do nothing but slope downward at this point. In fact, they’re running scared, with AT&T already instituting new plans that are more aggressively priced in order to close the gap.
Don’t think that AT&T will be the only carrier to attempt to get their pound of flesh while they can either. Expect every major carrier that offers the iPhone to split up plans like Ma Bell in order to offer a measly amount at the lower end and a beefy higher quantity plan, without many options in between.
Frankly, this change can’t come soon enough for me. SMS messages get sent on the control channel of your normal phone line, a segment of the connection normally used for diagnostic data.
This should make them free with any service that you already pay for but because of contracts and the relatively small choice of carriers in a given area, we get charged magnitudes more for messaging than we should. Anything that breaks that status quo and forces a change for the better is good for everyone, not just iPhone users. For now, the carriers are battening down the hatches and trying to squeeze out the last drop of blood, but they can’t do it forever. The closer we get them to dumb pipes, the better off we’ll be.
